Saint Mary’s Weekly News

May 17, 2015 – Our Day of Service and Goodness

 Our 125th Anniversary Celebration Continues!

Saint Mary’s began as a memorial chapel in honor of Alida Greely Brown who died suddenly on April 25, 1889. The chapel was built and dedicated in 1890 – 125 years ago.  Out of profound grief, a place where all can gather and experience the amazing grace of God has grown and developed. These TWO events remain in our Celebration season.

Founders Day Picnic -  Saturday, June 13 at 12 Noon

Ever been up to the top of the tower and look out over Casco Bay? Ever been down in the crypt to see the graves? Can you beat Fr. Nathan in a game of croquet or horseshoes? Let’s gather together for a fun day outdoors with a cookout, live music, lawn games, and tours of the entire Saint Mary’s campus, including the tower and the crypt – for those who are brave enough!

Thank you to our two Anniversary sponsors:  J.B. Brown & Sons  and  CM Almy

We appreciate their support of our 125th Anniversary Celebration. JB Brown & Sons is a local commercial real estate firm founded by John Marshall Brown’s father, John Bundy Brown. CM Almy is a church supply company with roots in Maine. They have been a vendor for Saint Mary’s for many years.

Eager to Eat healthy and support agriculture in Maine?
Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).  Do you want organic produce fresh from the farm and convenient for pick up?   Learn about our Crystal Spring Farm's CSA.
The farm is in Brunswick and they deliver shares to locations in greater Portland each week for pickup.  The Crystal Spring Farm CSA has been in partnership with another parish in Falmouth (the Foreside Community Church) for three years and members have enjoyed the bounty.         www.crystalspringcsa.com
Here are some key points to pique your interest:

  •  All the organizing work is done, you sign up on line, pay on line, and pick your produce box up at Foreside Community Church (on Route 88 at the Cumberland/Falmouth town line) on Wednesdays from June through October.
  • As the season progresses your children see the seasonal timing of vegetable production.  Vegetables don't grow in a refrigerated display case!
  • A "Portland Share" serves 1-2 non vegetarian adults or 1 vegetarian adult.  You pick at Foreside Community Church, 340 Foreside Rd.
  • Members are entitled to visit the CSA's "U-Pick" field all day on Sundays - the field features herbs, flowers, and vegetables, all included in your share price.
  • A weekly farm newsletter is delivered electronically.

Youth Ministry

High School Service Group Projects:  May  8, 22 and 24
This group serves as a vehicle for service, fellowship and spirituality for all high schoolers.  We focus on two of Saint Mary's established outreach programs:  Preble Street Soup Kitchen (on the 4th Sunday of every month) and Souper Supper (on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month.)  Please see the Sign-Up Table outside the Guild Room.  Or contact Anne LaFond (alafond@maine.rr.com or 781-8820) with your dates/times or any questions you might have.

Young Life Club: every MONDAY night at 7:31PM !
Young Life is a group of caring adults who reach kids where they are by  building relationships of trust and introducing them to Jesus Christ. Club is an OPEN event every Monday night at 2 Town Landing Rd (the Herdrich family house) where all high schoolers are invited to come and bring a friend. You can park in the town lot across from the Town Landing Market. Club is crazy fun each and every week!
