Saint Mary’s Weekly News

for September 16, 2012 - The Sixteenth Sunday of Pentecost

This Sunday Celebrant - The Rev. Katharine Babson

This Sunday--we have the joy of again welcoming the Rev. Katharine Babson to S. Mary’s pulpit.  Many will remember Kitty Babson from her time with us in 2005. We are delighted that she will be with us throughout the month of September.

Meet Father Nathan!!

Set aside next Friday, Sept 21 to join together and meet our new rector while he is on a brief visit to Falmouth.  We’ve planned a simple potluck and hope all (young and not-so-young, new to the parish and lifers, very active to Sunday worshippers) can join in this first glimpse into our amazing future. See invitation below to see what to bring to help.

Thursday morning worship

The Thursday group is still meeting for a worship service at 10:30am in the Guild Room.  This Thursday, Sept 20th, will be Morning Prayer.  Rev. Kitty Babson will celebrate the Holy Eucharist on Thursday, Sept 27th.  Check the bulletin “Weekly News” for dates in October.

How do people of faith talk together when we don’t agree?

On Thursday, September 20th at 7pm, the Maine Council of Churches and USM Interfaith Chaplaincy invite you to join an ecumenical conversation with four Maine spiritual leaders at the Luther Bonney Hall at USM.  Our own Bishop Steve will be one of the four featured leaders as they discuss the civil discourse of same sex marriage.  He is joined by leaders from the Roman Catholic Church, the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.  This should be a great educational opportunity and all are encouraged to attend.

Legacy Project

The town inspection of the framing, plumbing and wiring of the Guiding RAY spaces was successfully conducted and the hanging of dry-wall will be finished during the coming week.  The “deck” of the new administrative/chapel wing is scheduled to be laid during the coming week as well.    Don’t miss the tour of these spaces on Sept. 28th at 4pm.

Wanted:  Warm Winter Clothes for Learning Works

Please look through your closet for warm washable sweaters, sweat shirts, and or fleeces.  My students at Learning Works will be grateful; me too!  They are all recent refugees from the war-torn countries of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda.  They arrived with no warm winter clothes.  Please put your donations in a marked box in the church vestibule.  I will deliver your gifts each Monday before class.  We are still in need of backpacks (new or “gently used”) and cloth grocery bags.  FMI call Jean Wandel 781-4940.  Thank you.

Next Sunday is Soup Kitchen Sunday – September 23

The Fourth Sunday of each month, Saint Mary’s prepares and serves a hot meal to the clients at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen.  We need people to (a) go around 10:30 to help with the cooking and set-up; (b) to arrive about 11:45 to assist with table service; and/or (c) to help with clean-up beginning at 1:00.  Bless you. Questions?  Please call Marian McCue at 761-1936 or mmccue@maine.rr.com

Berm Party!

The Churchyard Committee is sponsoring another Berm Party.  The berms are in the Burial Garden  - the section of the Churchyard adjacent to the labyrinth.  The party day is  Monday, Sept 24th  (with a rain date of Wednesday, Sept 26th)  from 8 to 11am. The plan is to weed the berms and put down mulch.   It will go very quickly with a strong turnout.  It will be fun and feature music and refreshments.  Bring your weeder, gardening gloves and house guests!  If you have an extra hosta, some myrtle or pachysandra you want to relocate, bring them too!

Sparkles Organizational Meeting - Thursday, Sept 20th

ATTENTION ALL SPARKLERS (returning helpers and anyone interested in helping) please plan on attending on Sept. 20th for our first organizational meeting.  We will meet in the Guild Room at 6:30pm.  We have it on good authority that the Parish House will be ready for us to Sparkle on Dec. 8th.   For more information, please call Jan Mordarski 899-4099.

- New this year! SPARKLES BUCKS -----At coffee hour (after second service) we will be selling Sparkles Bucks which can be used by yourself or given as a gift certificate. They will be available in $10.00 amts. with a small discount for multiples of ten. If you cannot shop on the 8th yourself, they are a wonderful way to give a gift and encourage someone else to come.

- Calling All Cooks---Sparkles needs your recipes.  Newcomers and old timers alike!  The fifth in our S. Mary’s series is Vegetables, Eggs, Sandwiches and Side Dishes. Please submit them by the end of October to the church office either by e-mail or the forms provided in the Guild Room. The series has been a great addition to the Sparkles fun, and we need your submissions to keep it going.

REAL Housewives to resume this fall

This small group studies "the REAL Housewives of (1st Century) Palestine".  It has completed a review of the roles of women in the four Gospels and is now going to finish the study with a review of the Book of Acts and other sources on church history during the spread of  Christianity from Jerusalem, to Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth. As details are solidified we will announce the particulars of the starting date, place and time as soon as possible.  All are welcome and encouraged to participate!  FMI contact Bryan (bd1949@maine.rr.com) or Susan (sdench@maine.rr.com).

Harvest Community Supper  - Thursday, October 18th

Thursday, October 18, 2012, Falmouth's churches and the Jewish community will host the fourth annual Harvest Community Supper, which has become popular as a community get-together and a way to support the Falmouth Food Pantry. The roast turkey supper with all the fixings will be held at the Falmouth Congregational Church from 4:30 to 7 p.m.  See you there!

Socks for Soldiers Update

In March we sent 24 pairs of socks to the ‘Socks for Soldiers’ center in Ohio.  We received the following in an e-mail: “I want to thank you and your knitters very much for the awesome box of hand knitted socks, and purchased socks as well. God bless all of you and keep knitting for us.”  We have finished up the yarn and are ready to send the last of the socks which will bring our total to 34 pairs.

Help! Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

Consider hosting a coffee hour in the Guild Room following the service (either you yourself or with another family).  It’s easy and fun.  A feast is not needed – just a tidbit to enjoy with the coffee that is pre-made.  FMI, contact Betsy Stoddard at 829-2026 or e-mail at  jbstod@myfairpoint.net.

Parish House Use–Kitchen and Guild Room Only – SCHEDULE EARLY

Throughout much of the construction period, access to the Parish House will be limited to the Guild Room and Kitchen.  If you need this space to meet, please contact Beth Shaw (781-3366) early to reserve!  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Parish Office Hours -   Monday - Friday, 9am - 3pm

We are getting back into full fall swing.  It is important that Beth Shaw get uninterrupted blocks of time for some of the church projects that need attention.  Beth Miller is with us on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.)  and is available at the 2nd office trailer door.  Please try to be respectful of times when the partition-curtain is closed.

Eucharistic Visitors take Holy Communion to those unable to worship with us on Sunday morning.  The Eucharistic Visitor this week is Paul Engel.
