This Sunday we have the joy of again welcoming the Rev. Katharine Babson to S. Mary’s pulpit. Many will remember Kitty Babson from her time with us in 2005. We are delighted that she will be with us throughout the month of September.

Because of the Maine Marathon on Sunday the Eucharist service has been rescheduled for Saturday, September 29, at 5:00 in the afternoon.
Evensong and the Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, September 30, 2012, at 4:00 in the afternoon, there will be a service of Choral Evensong and the Blessing of Animals for the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. All pets—living, stuffed, imaginary, or drawn on paper—are welcome.
An Invitation from the Choir
We have a great need for new choir members and would love for you to join our merry ranks. Lifting your voice in song and leading our family in worship is a worthy ministry and we hope you will consider this calling. We are looking for folks who can sing any part; and if you are interested, please see Bruce or any choir member, or just come Thursday at 7 PM for our rehearsal (presently in the church). We would greatly appreciate your contribution and welcome you enthusiastically.
Today is Soup Kitchen Sunday – September 23
The Fourth Sunday of each month, Saint Mary’s prepares and serves a hot meal to the clients at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen. We need people to (a) go around 10:30 to help with the cooking and set-up; (b) to arrive about 11:45 to assist with table service; and/or (c) to help with clean-up beginning at 1:00. Bless you. Come Meet the Author
Kate Braestrup, a chaplain with the Maine Warden Service and author of HERE IF YOU NEED ME, as well as other books, will be guest speaker for the Butterfield Memorial Series at Trinity Episcopal Church, 580 Forest Avenue, on Thursday, September 27, at 7 pm (doors open at 6:30). She will be available to sign her book(s) at the reception following the program.
Thursday Eucharist
The Thursday group is still meeting for a worship service at 10:30am in the Guild Room. This Thursday, Sept 27th, Rev. Kitty Babson will celebrate the Holy Eucharist. Check the bulletin “Weekly News” for dates in October.
Legacy Project
The hanging of dry-wall continues in the lower floor of the parish house. The “deck” of the new administrative/chapel wing has been laid and the framing for the walls will start this coming week. The water main for the sprinkler and new domestic lines for the Parish House will be completed next week. All the repairs at the Rectory have been completed and the painting has begun. Don’t miss the tour of the Parish Hall spaces on Sept. 28th at 4pm.
REAL Housewives to resume this fall
The small group study "REAL Housewives of (1st Century) Palestine" is going to start up again Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 at the home of Bryan and Susan Dench, 295 Foreside Road, in Falmouth. Jesus dealt with women with respect and regard unheard of in the ancient world, including within Judaism. Women were significant in the life and ministry of Jesus, among other things providing material support for Jesus and the apostles. This continuation of our small group study for men and women will examine the facts about the role and significance of women in God’s plan of salvation as accomplished through the person and work of Jesus the Christ, and in the development and spread of Christianity throughout the world. We will meet for an hour on Tuesdays until early/ mid- December. All are invited and welcome. You need not have participated before to join in now. lSparkles Boutique -- Gathering and sorting begins Oct. 20th. We need your beautiful and gently used treasures for the Fair Boutique on Dec. 8th. lNew this year! SPARKLES BUCKS -----At coffee hour (after second service) we will be selling Sparkles Bucks which can be used by yourself or given as a gift certificate. They will be available in $10.00 amts. with a small discount for multiples of ten. If you cannot shop on the 8th yourself, they are a wonderful way to give a gift and encourage someone else to come. Sparkles Bucks may be spent only on items from the boutique.
lCalling All Cooks---Sparkles needs your recipes. The fifth in our S. Mary’s series is Vegetables, Eggs and Side Dishes. Please submit them by October 26th to the church office either by e-mail or the forms provided in the Guild Room. The series has been a great addition to the Sparkles Fun but we need your ideas to keep it going.
Berm Party!
The Churchyard Committee is sponsoring another Berm Party. The berms are in the Burial Garden - the section of the Churchyard adjacent to the labyrinth. The party day is Monday, Sept 24th (with a rain date of Wednesday, Sept 26th) from 8 to 11am. The plan is to weed the berms and put down mulch. It will go very quickly with a strong turnout. It will be fun and feature music and refreshments. Bring your weeder, gardening gloves and house guests! If you have an extra hosta, some myrtle or pachysandra you want to relocate, bring them too!
Wanted: Warm Winter Clothes for Learning Works
Please look through your closet for warm washable sweaters, sweat shirts, and or fleeces. My students at Learning Works will be grateful; me too! They are all recent refugees from the war-torn countries of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. They arrived with no warm winter clothes. Please put your donations in a marked box in the church vestibule. I will deliver your gifts each Monday before class. We are still in need of backpacks (new or “gently used”) and cloth grocery bags. FMI call Jean Wandel 781-4940. Thank you.
Harvest Community Supper benefits the Food Pantry - Thurs., October 18th
S. Mary’s, the other Falmouth churches and the Jewish community are hosting a free supper in support of the Food Pantry. This fourth annual Harvest Community Supper will be held at the Falmouth Congregational Church, 267 Falmouth Road on Thursday, October 18 from 4:30 to 7:00pm. Plan on joining the community for this evening of good food and fellowship. Given the great and growing need of many of our neighbors, there will be an opportunity for free-will donations to support the Falmouth Food Pantry. The supper is free and will include roast turkey with all the fixings, vegetables and homemade apple crisp with ice cream. Sign-up sheets for turkey donations and for volunteer opportunities (cooking, serving and clean-up) are posted in the Guild room. Guiding RAY (Religious Adventures for Youth)
Our Sunday morning children's program has resumed with classes for Preschool through 6th Grade and Nursery Care for children under 3. The theme for 2012-13 is God’s Covenants. We meet for “Family Chapel” at 9:30 in the rectory (temporary Guiding RAY home until the undercroft rooms are ready at the end of October), with children going to specific workshops or Godly Play for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners, all starting at 10:00. The children join their parents in church for Communion. Watch for our intergenerational services when we all come to church together and worship as a community - great lessons for our young parishioners as well as our seasoned parishioners.
Desired: The Nursery room is looking for Duplo blocks (not the big mega blocks and not the little Lego blocks.) The medium-sized Duplo blocks would be just right! Thanks so much for dropping any you can share off in the parish office or with Julie Otte in the nursery on Sunday mornings.
Help! Coffee Hour Hosts Needed
Consider hosting a coffee hour in the Guild Room following the service (either you yourself or with another family). It’s easy and fun. A feast is not needed – just a tidbit to enjoy with the coffee that is pre-made. FMI, contact Betsy Stoddard at 829-2026 or e-mail at jbstod@myfairpoint.net.
Learn to Knit Socks
Several people have told me they would like to learn to make socks. Beth Miller is willing to teach whoever wants to learn, either individually or in a group. She is available all day Monday and Friday or Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. If you are interested, please call Beth Miller at 865-3300 or e-mail emmzplace@hotmail.com and we can make amenable arrangements. Any family member or a friend would love to receive a pair of handmade socks.

We are getting back into full fall swing. It is important that Beth Shaw get uninterrupted blocks of time for some of the church projects that need attention. Beth Miller is with us on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) and is available at the 2nd office trailer door. Please try to be respectful of times when the partition-curtain is closed.
Parish House Use–Kitchen and Guild Room Only – SCHEDULE EARLY
Throughout much of the construction period, access to the Parish House will be limited to the Guild Room and Kitchen. If you need this space to meet, please contact Beth Shaw (781-3366) early to reserve! Thank you for your patience and understanding.
