10 things every Christian should know about Pentecost

1.   Pentecost Sunday marks the day when the Holy Spirit filled Mary the Mother of Jesus, the 12 apostles (now including Matthias), and about 100 other disciples.

2.   Pentecost occurs 50 days after the Lord’s Resurrection.

3.   The Bible records the events of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2.

4.   Pentecost occurred10 days after the Lord’s Ascension.

5.   Pentecost is commonly known as "the birthday of the Church", because the Holy Spirit breathed life into the community of disciples and sent them out as witnesses.

6.   Pentecost fulfilled the Lord’s promise to send the "Advocate" and "the Spirit of Truth" in John chapters 15 & 16.

7.   Pentecost launched the large-scale preaching of Jesus as the promised Messiah. Acts 2:41 states that about 3000 people were baptized after the Holy Spirit filled Peter and he began to preach.

8.   Pentecostal churches, with almost 300 million adherents worldwide, derive their name from the Holy Spirit event described in Acts 2.

9.   Jews also celebrate Pentecost, but not for the same reason as Christians. It is called Shavu’ot or the Festival of Weeks or also Pentecost. Leviticus 21 commands that this be observed 50 days after Pesach (Passover) in celebration of the giving of the Torah at Sinai.

10.  In Western churches, Pentecost is usually represented with the color red, which symbolizes the tongues of fire which rested on each of those gathered with Mary and the Apostles.
