Saint Mary's Weekly News

18 November 2018  –  The twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Getting Ready for Sunday!

"No one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of his body." (Ephesians 5:29-30)

WELCOME to Charlotte Mirella Chappell !

We welcome Lottie, the newest member of the Chappell family, into the spiritual Body of Christ together with all the saints of God of every generation. Congratulations to her parents, Will & Michelle, and all her family

COMMON GROUND: every Thursday!

11/22:   No gathering on Thanksgiving

11/29:   Sparkles Prep Party - with PIZZA for all

12/6:    How To Keep Advent at Home (last one until the New Year)

The basic structure is:

5 - 7pm    Potluck-style dinner. Take a break from cooking a whole meal. Bring a piece or just eat what we have. If you can't imagine eating early, come and enjoy fellowship and discussion. Open to everyone!!

5:30 pm       Voice for Life – music training open to all           OR

5:45-6:45 pm    Presentations on topical issues in our community.

6:45 pm  Compline Service in the Fr James Chapel and clean-up

Compline is a ten-minute choral service from the early church intended for the end of the day.  It is a perfect way to unwind and enter into a spirit of quiet prayer and meditation, with evenings hymns of thanksgiving.

Grace Given:  Stewardship 2019

Each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift.  Ephesians 4:7

The founding of our church was a direct gift of grace from the Brown family. Grieving after the loss of their daughter, Alida, at age 19, they built the chancel as a summer chapel. In the plaque on the floor in front of the rail, the words speak about our building to benefit the living.  Saint Mary's has a long history of going beyond the doors of the church to support the greater community. Help us continue to do so by pledging for 2019. Thank you to all who have turned in their pledge forms. Our goal is $285,000.

Events & Happenings

Concert Spirituel:  November 18 at 4 PM

The Saint Mary Choir, the St. Cecilia children's choir, guest violinists from the St Mary Schola, Mary Jo Carlsen, and Lauren Hastings Genova, along with Thomas Troeger on the flute, Lesley Dolinger as soloist, and our own Bruce Fithian will present a special concert of sacred music: Concert spirituel, on Sunday November 18 at 4:00 pm. The title: Concert spirituel, refers to the first public concerts of classical music in Paris in the 18th century, in which sacred and chamber music was offered to the public.   Not to be missed!

Thanksgiving Eve Eucharist:  Wednesday evening, Nov. 21, at 6 pm

The Eucharist with favorite Thanksgiving hymns will be celebrated the night before Thanksgiving Day. All ages are welcome, and bring your guests!

And then we go outside to celebrate the people for whom we are most thankful, both living and deceased, with the Lighting of the Kyros Memorial and Celebration Tree.  Drop or send your names in to the parish office by Monday, November 19

Submit your names for the Memorial & Celebration Tree lighting, on Thanksgiving eve, November 21 following the Eucharist at 6pm  (see insert)

Sparkles NEWS: The Sparkles Fair is December 1, 9 AM to 2 PM

The Season is upon us!

This Saturday, November 17, is Garlanding Day, where we decorate the Guild Hall and Auditorium for Christmas.  Please lend a hand to help make these rooms festive for the Season.

On Sunday, November 18, between the services (app 9-10am) service, we will make birdseed ornaments with the Guiding Ray kids in the basement art room.  Also, following the second service, we will assemble the St. Mary's Friendship Soup.  This is a fun and easy way to participate in Sparkles, so please join us in the Guild Room. Remember to also pick up the appetizers you ordered at Sparkles Spirits on Sunday.  They will be available after both services in the kitchen.

On Wednesday, November 21, we will have the Lighting of the Kyros Memorial & Celebration Tree following the Thanksgiving Eucharist. Be sure to send in your honored names by Monday, Nov 19

BE SURE TO:

  • Bake cookies and other goodies for the bake sale
  • Sign up to help before, during and after the Boutique on Dec. 1
  • Hang flyers where you work or shop (they are in the auditorium)
  • Sign up to help or bring food to the Schola Concert and Reception

"Rest for your Soul": Advent Quiet Morning: Saturday, Dec. 15

An Advent Quiet Day is a traditional way to prepare expectantly together for the coming of Emmanuel.  This Advent we will offer a quiet (but not silent) opportunity to pray and mediate about the balance between our activity in the world and our very human need for rest and refreshment. We'll start at 9:00 am and conclude no later than 12:30 pm.   As the name implies, we will focus on biblical and non-biblical injunctions to rest, a theme we need to keep in mind year-round.  Sign-ups are at the door to the Guild Room and are helpful for preparations, but come even if you didn't RSVP!

Advent Lessons & Carols: December 2 at both 8 and 10:15 AM

We look forward to our annual celebration in Advent with the Lessons and Carols Service on the first Sunday of Advent, December 2 by singing favorite hymns such as Hymn 60, Creator of the stars of night; People Look East; and Hymn 57, Lo! He comes with clouds descending.  In addition to these Advent hymns, there are remarkable selections from the Saint Mary's choir, the St. Cecilia Choir, the handbell choir plus special musical compositions and interpretations by our own David Vernier, Thomas Troeger, and Bruce Fithian.

What a wonderful way to begin the Advent season!

Youth Ministry

Guiding RAY  (Religious Adventures for Youth)

This past Sunday in Guiding RAY we honored our Saint Mary's Veterans during the 9:30 - 10:00 formation time. It was an amazing show of gratitude! The Veterans, the kids and many adults enjoyed hearing what it is like to serve our country. And we all enjoyed belting out "As the Caissons go rolling along" song.

This week in Guiding RAY we will continue our lesson on Abraham and Sarah. As we learn about how they were blessed by God we will learn that we too, are blessed in our relationship with God and in the strength we receive from God.  We are blessed to be a part of the family of God.

The Nursery opens at 9:30am for our youngest disciples in the Guiding RAY area every Sunday morning for the later Eucharist. Please contact Alison Hayward, ajhmcmonagle@gmail.com, if you are able to assist her with nursery care.
