Saint Mary’s Weekly News
November 8, 2015 – The Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost
Gratitude Progressive Dinner: Saturday, November 7th! There’s still time!
Mark your calendars now! If you attended or hosted last year, you know what a good time we all had.
How does it work? There’s still time!!
5:45 PM: We gather at the Parish House for social time and a blessing prayer.
6:30 PM: Everyone heads off to their assigned homes for dinner. Directions are provided. (Attendees will be assigned to a host home for the entrée portion of the evening. Hosts will get their list of guests the week prior to the dinner).
8:45 PM: Everyone returns to the Parish House for dessert!
Those with last names beginning with A-L bring a simple appetizer to share for the social hour. Those with last names beginning with M-Z bring a simple dessert to share. (Dinner hosts are exempt from this.) This is a fun and casual way to get to know fellow parishioners.
There is a sign-up sheet for hosts and attendees outside the Guild Room, or contact Beth Shaw or Janet Bowne (janetbowne@maine.rr.com ). Please indicate on the sign-up sheet if child care at the Parish House from 5:45-9:30 PM would help to make this possible.

We hope you will come and sit at tables with our Guiding RAY children to enjoy refreshments and exchange stories about Thanksgiving, what it means to you, your favorite memories, etc. There will be a small craft that you can work on with them if you choose, and Guiding RAY teachers will be there to facilitate conversation, as desired. Our youngest parishioners want and need to know you better! And we think it will be fun for you, too! THOSE ATTENDING THE 10 AM SERVICE ARE, OF COURSE, ALSO VERY WELCOME!!!
We ask ALL parishioners to bring a donation for the Falmouth Food Pantry that day - a can of tuna or a bag of rice would be particularly welcome. THANK YOU!

OUR HYMN HERITAGE – November 8, 2015
Hymn 645 ‘The King of love my shepherd is’ is one of several favorite hymns based on paraphrases of the beloved psalm 23. The verses are by Sir Henry Baker, where they first appeared in his collection 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' in 1868. Baker paraphrased the 23rd psalm with Christian references, such as the cup becoming the Eucharistic chalice. Henry Baker’s last words before death were the third verse of this hymn.
The Irish folk melody, known as St. Columba refers to a 6th century Irish missionary credited with helping bring Christianity to Scotland. As a hymn it first appeared in Dublin in 1874. The hymn was sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.
As part of the Protestant Reformation heritage, Episcopalians enjoy the importance of psalm singing. Following Martin Luther’s insistence on congregational singing, John Calvin influenced the publishing of psalms in French which became known as the Genevan Psalter, first published in 1539.
Hymn 404, We will extol you, ever blessed Lord, is a beautiful example from this collection, and is based on a paraphrase of psalm 145 which first appeared in English in the Scottish Psalter of 1650.
The melody (associated with another psalm) was one of the most universally known in Protestant churches of the sixteenth century in France, Holland, Scotland and England. It was apparently sung by two thousand citizens of Edinburgh in 1582 at the return from exile of a popular clergyman of the city.
Hymn 594 ‘God of grace and God of glory’ and its twin, Hymn 690 ‘Guide me, O thou great Jehovah’ are surely some of the most loved of traditional hymns. Those singing Welsh are once again the source of this melody, known as Cwm Rhondda (referring to the Rhondda Valley in Wales). Written by John Hughs for a Baptist Singing Festival in 1903, it was once considered “too popular” and not included in most hymn books, being kept alive in pamphlet form. Finally, most realized, ‘this is a great melody full of vigor and energy; let’s sing it!”
The verses are by a Mainer, a preacher of international acclaim, Henry Emerson Fosdick, whose summer home was in Boothbay Harbor. The verses coupled with Cwm Rhondda were first sung at the opening of the great Riverside Church in New York City in 1930.
