Our Great Hymn Heritage: September 20
We are blessed to lift our voices in praise each Sunday and sing the wonderful treasury of hymns in The Hymnal. It’s amazing how these songs can be sung hundreds of times and still retain their power. We probably all have our favorite hymns, and we thought it would be interesting to explore the history of some of these wonderful melodies and texts.
Hymn 408 “Sing praise to God who reigns above” comes from an old German hymn which from its first appearance attracted unusual attention (THC). It was found in almost all hymnals in German speaking countries. A wonderful hymn of praise based on Deuteronomy 32:3: I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
The melody “Mit Freuden Zart” first appeared in the hymnal of the Bohemian Brethren in 1566 (the Bohemian Brethren was a famous pre-reformation movement led by the Czech Jan Huns who was martyred in 1415).
Hymn 482 “Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy” is known as Slane and is based on an old Irish tune of folk origin. Slane refers to a hill about ten miles from Tara hill, the ancient seat of Irish culture and history. It is on Slane hill that St. Patrick defied the pagan king Loigaire by lighting the Paschal fire on Easter eve.
The most famous words to this melody are “Be thou my vision.” The text for “Lord of all hopefulness” is by Jan Strutter and is a prayer for God’s presence at some of the daily activities of life, for example, waking, sleeping, laboring, and returning home.
Hymn 390 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” is considered by many as one of the greatest hymns of praise, but was actually not included in our hymnal until 1940. It is based on an old German melody of folk origin and a text by Joachim Neander (1650-1680, an important leader in Reformation hymn writing.
