20 October 2019 – The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Installation of Bishop Thomas Brown: Sat, Oct 26 at 3 PM
Everyone is invited to gather for a special celebration at the Cathedral of Saint Luke on Saturday for the "seating" of the Bishop in the Cathedra. This is the Bishop's official seat at Saint Luke's, and each parish church has a smaller Bishop's cathedra as well. In addition, all acolytes and choir members are invited to participate. You may also watch from home via a livestream on the internet. FMI, see www.episcopalmaine.org.
12th Annual Harvest Community Supper: Thu, Oct 24, 4:30-7:00 PM
Saint Mary's joins with other religious communities in Falmouth to once again host a free turkey supper with all the fixings to raise funds for the Falmouth Food Pantry, a resource devoted to serving the needs of many in our area. The dinner is held at the Falmouth Congregational Church (267 Falmouth Road) and is open to all. Plan on coming to enjoy an evening of good food, goodwill and friendship. Free-will donations (cash or check) are gratefully accepted for the food pantry. Thank you in advance for supporting this worthy cause! Contact John Brooks (781-2097) with any questions.
Evensong: Sunday October 27 at 4:00 PM
Saint Mary's will gather for a choral evensong, one of the glories of the Anglican tradition. This service is uniquely built around contemplative prayers and anthems, beginning with the opening gentle hymn ''The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended.' The serene Phos Hilaron, 'O Gracious Light,' will be accompanied by shimmering handbells from the Saint Mary Handbell choir. A beautiful setting of Mary's song, the Magnificat, will be offered by the choir. This piece, 'The Portland Canticles,' was written in honor of Albert Melton's 20th anniversary as Organist/Choirmaster at Saint Luke's Cathedral. And a newly composed anthem by our choir member, David Vernier, 'Christ In Me' will be offered at the conclusion of this beautiful service.
Oct 31: Trunk or Treat! a special Common Ground
Bring some candy to pass out as costumed kids of all ages trick or treat from car trunk to car trunk. Be fun and creative by decorating your trunk if you wish!! Potluck dinner will begin at 5pm and will continue while the Trunk or Treating festivities will start at 5:45. We'll be sure the cars are in parking spaces so the goblins and gremlins can easily go from car to car. All are welcome and the more, the merrier! If your family is trick or treating in other neighborhoods and want to stop in to top off their bounty, you're welcome to join us! For those who are ready, there will also be guided tours of Saint Mary's Crypt!
Autumn Sunday Formation: 9:30 – 10 AM
Everyone is invited to gather on Sunday mornings in either of two groups – a prayerful group meeting in the Chapel, and a discussion group meeting in the Auditorium.
- Current Events and the Mind of Christ in the Auditorium: (led by Fr. Nathan & Deacon Christine)
- Be Still in the Fr James Chapel: Meditation, Prayer & Discussion (led by Merle Marie Troeger, Jennifer Gregg and Becky Pride)
The Current Events group depends on input from all of you. You provide the headlines for discussion by emailing Nathan+ (nathanferrell@smary.org) before 5 PM on Saturday with three bits of information: An actual current news headline from recent days; A brief summary of the issue under consideration; and source.
Grab a cup of coffee or tea and join the lively discussion in the Auditorium. Together we will look for points of connection between the headline and the Scriptures and Traditions of the Church, always seeking after the Mind of Christ.

Youth Ministry
Guiding RAY (Religious Adventures for Youth): Sundays, 10 AM
Our Guiding RAY programs for all young people ages 0 to 14, with classes beginning at 10am. The Nursery, classes for pre-K through grade 5, and a group for Middle Schoolers now called Ignite are all available. Our classes are designed to both appeal to and offer our children an opportunity to learn key bible stories and to develop their relationship with God. For more information on Guiding RAY, visit our website www.smary.org We are always looking for leaders to assist with these crucial programs. Please contact Megan Akers to find out ways you can help! GuidingRAY@smary.org
This week in Guiding RAY we continue our rotation on Elijah. Elijah's story is found in many chapters of the Bible, because he was such an important prophet. We will learn of Elijah's struggles, and how God provided for him – by sending ravens to feed him, by providing water during a drought, and later providing miraculous food from a widow and her son. We will also learn that we need to trust God when things seem hard and that God will always take care of us. Thank you to Darren and Katie Clark, Len Taylor and Meg Hurdman for leading the rotation workshops this month.
Guiding SAY (Singing Adventures for Youth): Sundays, 9:30 AM
Before Guiding RAY classes begin, all young people are invited to gather downstairs with our own Maria Belva for fun singing. No special skill or experience required, only a willingness to sing together.
Acolytes wanted! New training to be offered on November 10
Young people (age 8 and up) as well as adults are invited to become acolytes. Our acolytes help the clergy to lead worship on Sundays and Holidays, and they have the summer off. The Gospel and Epistle acolytes carry the torches (candles) and the Crucifer carries the cross. The training provided by Father Nathan is short and easy. It is scheduled for Sunday, 11/10 after the 10:15am liturgy. Acolytes generally serve once a month. A great way to connect with your parish family and to gather community service hours. FMI and to sign up for training, please contact Sandy Couch-Kelly or Fr. Nathan
The Nursery is open for our youngest parishioners every Sunday, 9 - 11:30am, so parents can attend Formation classes or sing in the choir. Please contact Megan Akers, GuidingRAY@smary.org, if you are able to assist with care.
IGNITE - Middle School Youth Group:! All kids in grades 6-8 are welcome to join this growing group that meets every two weeks on Sundays at 10 AM downstairs in the Youth Room. Next October gathering: 10/27.
