Don’t forget the Tag Sale this Saturday, May 12th

On Saturday, May 12th, from 8 am until 12 noon Falmouth Girl Scout Troop #3497 will host a giant tag sale in the S. Mary's auditorium. You can still drop donated items off on the stage Friday evening.  The troop will sort, display and price all usable items.  All items unsold will be donated to a variety of charities. Funds raised will go toward a service trip being planned by the troop in the Spring of 2013. The troop will also be making a donation to the Legacy Campaign from the proceeds of the sale. If you have any questions, please contact Meg Hurdman at 781-7478 or hurdman@maine.rr.com.

Schola Concert   “Music for A While”   This Sunday at S. Mary’s at 4 pm

The St. Mary Schola under the direction of Bruce Fithian will present ‘Music for a While’, a delightful spring concert of the music of Henry Purcell and John Blow. The first half of the program will feature some of Purcell’s best loved songs and duets, including “Music for a While,”  “If Music be the Food of Love,”  “Sweeter than Roses,”  “Sound the Trumpet” and men’s “Catches” (humorous canons). On the second half, excerpts from Venus and Adonis, a rarely performed opera by John Blow will be presented, recounting the great love story from mythology, accompanied by a small ensemble of strings, recorders, lute and harpsichord. The roles will be sung by Andrea Graichen and John D. Adams. Tickets are $20 and available at the website stmaryschola.org or at the door.

Guiding RAY (Religious Adventures for Youth)

Year 6 of Guiding RAY, Our Faith and God’s Kingdom, has classes for Preschool through 6th grade.  We also provide Nursery Care for children under 4.  Please join us at 9:40 for a newly revised Family Chapel Service.  Guiding RAY workshops start promptly at 10:00.  Following Guiding RAY rotation classes, children usually come to church for Communion and join their families.     If you have an interest in teaching or working in the Nursery with our littlest parishioners, please email GuidingRay@smary.org.

Help welcome summer with our Strawberry Shortcake Coffee Hour

Following next Sunday’s 10am liturgy, May 20th, we will have an “End-of-the-year shortcake feed” held on the church grounds to help Guiding RAY close out another successful and fun year teaching our children.  In case of inclement weather, we’ll gorge inside.  Like last year, the Hospitality Committee is serving juicy strawberry shortcake during the coffee hour time frame.  To help out, please contact Anne LaFond or with any questions (alafond@maine.rr.com, 781-8820).

Free Organ Concert by Paul Jordan

Sunday, May 20, at 4:00pm Paul Jordan, who played at S. Mary’s last August,  will present a “palindrome concert” of mostly works by J. S. Bach performed on St. Mary’s beautiful Casavant organ.

The Bridge-a-thon will be held at S. Mary’s on May 18th from 1pm to 4 pm.  If you are able to provide something for the refreshment table spread, please contact Marge Devine by e-mail at mdevine1@maine.rr.com or by phone at 797-5082 for final planning. Many thanks.

Learning Works

Do you have used backpacks or woven grocery bags you don’t need that you would be willing to donate to Learning Works?  The students, newly arrived refugees, would be very grateful.  They do not have money, and they walk long distances for food which they carry home in flimsy plastic sacks.  FMI call Jean Wandel 781-4940.

Legacy Campaign Progress

We are very pleased to report that we received word from the Town of Falmouth that the May 1st Planning Board vote was sufficient to pass the motion approving the Legacy construction plan (with conditions relating to buffering, vehicular circulation and water runoff management.) We are still on track for a June groundbreaking! Next steps: receipt and review of sub-contractor bids, budget review and consultation, Norway Savings Bank to determine the amount of a construction loan. Stay tuned!

Discernment (Search) Committee Update

The Discernment Committee continues to work very hard to discern our next rector from a pool of very qualified candidates. As you may recall, we have recently begun phone interviews.  As of this writing, we have completed six interviews. Between meetings and interviews, our committee has logged 9+ hours together this week. We gather in the computer room in the Parish Hall.  It's a tight squeeze but all 13 of us fit around the table. The candidates are on speaker phone. Some of the questions are asked of each candidate but there are customized questions for each candidate. Those questions are drawn from the responses the candidates have sent to our questions. We all participate in the questioning during the one hour interviews. The interviewees are well prepared and have learned a lot about Saint Mary's from our web site. We have four more first time phone interviews to schedule. We have some candidates whom we've just reviewed and who are sending us their answers.  As of May 15th, we will no longer be "receiving names". Our next step will be to determine our semifinalists and schedule a time to meet in person. If you do have anyone in your circle that might be interested in applying, he/she should contact the Diocese by next Tuesday!  Thank you for your prayers.

The Cathedral Church of St. Luke announces a new men’s group

All men, regardless of age, race, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation to join a new St. Luke’s men’s group. Our goal is to offer a safe and comfortable environment for men to share and grow together. There is not yet a proposed format or book study as we desire to only explore the idea of male spirituality and male issues for now, perhaps later touching on questions of meaning and purpose, transitions, relationships and other areas of interest. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Sam Colson at (207) 607-2081.
