Saint Mary’s Weekly News
for May 6, 2012 – The Fifth Sunday of Easter - Bishop’s Visitation
We are blessed to have the bishop with us, this Sundaymorning. He will celebrate and preach at eight o’clock, and at ten o’clock, he will preside for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation of vows. As is the custom, the loose offering will be donated to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, and we hope all will be generous.
A Wonderful Spring Saint Mary Schola Concert
On Sunday, May 13 at 4 pm, the St Mary Schola under the direction of Bruce Fithian will present ‘Music for a While’, a delightful spring concert of the music of Henry Purcell and John Blow. The first half of the program will feature some of Purcell’s best loved songs and duets, including Music for a While, If Music be the Food of Love, Sweeter than Roses, Sound the Trumpet and men’s Catches (humorous canons). On the second half, excerpts from Venus and Adonis, a rarely performed opera by John Blow will be presented, recounting the great love story from mythology, accompanied by a small ensemble of strings, recorders, lute and harpsichord. The roles will be sung by Andrea Graichen and John D. Adams. Tickets are $20 and available at the website stmaryschola.org or at the door.

On Saturday, May 12th, from 8 am until 12 noon Falmouth Girl Scout Troop #3497 will host a giant tag sale in the S. Mary's auditorium. This is a great opportunity for all to clean out our basements, garages, and attics; bring all donations to S. Mary's for the sale! (S. Mary's Guilds and Committees are doing the same in preparation for the upcoming renovation.) Please leave all donations on the stage (behind the curtain) the week of May 7th-11th. The troop will sort, display and price all usable items. All items unsold will be donated to a variety of charities. Funds raised will go toward a service trip being planned by the troop in the Spring of 2013. The troop will also be making a donation to the Legacy Campaign from the proceeds of the sale. If you have any questions, please contact Meg Hurdman at 781-7478 or hurdman@maine.rr.com.

Legacy Project: Town Permitting Process Moves Forward
We are pleased to report that the Zoning Board of Appeals cleared S. Mary's to move forward with the Legacy Project--with conditions that focused on buffering of the upper parking lot, vehicular circulation, and management of water run-off. S. Mary's presented to the Planning Board on May 1 and as of this writing we await a final permitting decision.

Organ Concert by Paul Jordan
Please join us for a wonderful free organ concert on our beautiful Casavant organ given by Paul Jordan on Sunday May 20 at 4 PM. This will be a ‘palindrome concert’ of mostly works of J. S. Bach. You will probably remember Paul playing at S. Mary's last August, when he fell in love with our wonderful organ and offered to give this recital. He was mentored by Helmut Walcha, the renowned Bach interpreter with whom he spent four years of study at the State Music Academy in Frankfurt am Main. He held a professorship for two decades at the State University of New York Binghamton and his concert tours have taken him to cities on four continents.
S. Mary's parishioner Bryan Dench will be preaching on Romans - chapter 12 and Christian forgiveness at the Bowdoin College chapel service on Sunday, May 6, at 6:00pm. The chapel is on the Bowdoin campus in Brunswick and all are welcome to attend.
Altar Guild Silver Collection
The Altar Guild has the privilege of preparing the altar for any service held at Saint Mary's. We are responsible for the cleaning and care of all of the things used for worship. One of the many lovely things about Saint Mary's is the collection of linens, silver and brass pieces we have to use in our worship services. Over time, some of our other silver pieces have become bent or porous from the acid and tannins in the wine. It is now time for us to replace the silver pitchers used for the water and wine. To that end, we are hoping that parishioners might have some odd pieces of sterling silver, perhaps a spoon that has been twisted in the disposal or a trophy that has lost its meaning. Please consider donating it to our silver collection. We'll "recycle" it into a new set of pitchers for our weekly worship. You're welcome to put small pieces into the collection plate on Sundays or leave any larger pieces of sterling silver in the main office. If neither of those work, contact Ruth Kimball, 854-8255 or Janet Bowne 781-3844 to arrange for a pick up.
Guiding RAY (Religious Adventures for Youth)
Year 6 of Guiding RAY, Our Faith and God’s Kingdom, has classes for Preschool through 6th grade. We also provide Nursery Care for children under 4. Please join us at 9:40 for a newly revised Family Chapel Service. Guiding RAY workshops start promptly at 10:00. Following Guiding RAY rotation classes, children usually come to church for Communion and join their families. If you have an interest in teaching or working in the Nursery with our littlest parishioners, please email GuidingRay@smary.org.
The Cathedral Church of St. Luke announces a new men’s group
All men, regardless of age, race, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation to join a new St. Luke’s men’s group. Our goal is to offer a safe and comfortable environment for men to share and grow together. There is not yet a proposed format or book study as we desire to only explore the idea of male spirituality and male issues for now, perhaps later touching on questions of meaning and purpose, transitions, relationships and other areas of interest. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Sam Colson at (207) 607-2081.
